What is marriage counseling or couples therapy like?  I am not sure I want to talk about my problems to someone I don't know.

I will do my best to put you at ease when talking about personal problems.  I have experience with many different kinds of relationship difficulties.  I will listen to both of you respectfully and I will also actively coach you to help change patterns that are not working.  I will teach you tools to build a stronger, more satisfying relationship.

What should I look for when choosing a couples therapist?

In Texas, any licensed mental health professional can offer marriage counseling or couples therapy. There are excellent couples therapists who are licensed as marriage and family therapists, psychologists, professional counselors and clinical social workers.  However, it is essential to choose a therapist who has extensive training and experience in working with couples. Ask the potential therapists about their training and experience, including what percentage of their practice is working with couples. Clinical membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy is one indicator that the therapist has specialized training in couples therapy.

What if my spouse/partner won't come to counseling?

Couples therapy usually works best when both people are a part of the process.  It is not unusual for one person to be more reluctant to participate.  If your loved one doesn't want to join you in counseling and you are feeling pain about the relationship, we can start by working with you.

How long is this going to take?

After we have met for a couple of sessions, I can usually give you an idea of how long the process might take.  The way that I work with couples isn't a "one size fits all" approach.  We will decide together how often to meet based on what works best for you.  Usually it helps to meet frequently in the beginning to build a strong foundation.  As things improve, we put more time between appointments, as you work more on your relationship on your own.  Some couples find it useful to come in occasionally for a "relationship tune-up" after finishing therapy.

Do you accept insurance?

I do not file insurance for clients.  However, I do provide receipts for our sessions which may be used to file with your insurance company.  If you would like to use your health insurance, check with your particular plan to see if couples therapy or family psychotherapy is covered. Many insurers do not cover couples therapy as relationship problems may not be considered to be a "medical condition" or "psychiatric disorder."  It is also a good idea to ask about your deductible and about whether the number of sessions is limited by your plan.  Sometimes companies' "flexible spending plans" will pay for couples therapy.  Payment is due at the time of service.  I accept cash, checks and credit cards.
